National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awarded a grant to Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado to support its January 2025 program The Voice of Juana Inés. This concert celebrates the life and spirit of Juana Ines de la Cruz (1648-95) through music and storytelling with visual projections of art from her time and place. Born Inés de Asbaje y Ramírez de Santillana, she became known as Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz after she joined a convent. Sor Juana was a Mexican poet, philosopher, and composer who has inspired many with her life story and influential works. A number of themes from her life and writings, such as gender equality, education rights, and colonialism, connect powerfully with today’s world. Musical selections will include a composition attributed to Sor Juana, Madre la de los primores, plus musical settings of her poetry and a variety of instrumental pieces from her time. Music created specifically for Mexican convents will be featured, including a work by Juan de Lienas, a composer of possible indigenous background who flourished during Juana’s time. The program will be in Spanish and English, with Gabriella Cavallero, Actress/Storyteller.
